Painted kantharos

Description

This painted kantharos is a vessel for drinking wine found in the burial of a teenager. The outer surface has an engobe and decoration on two sides with the image of a pair of eyes, an ivy branch, two bands of drop ornament, and a meander between them. The bottom is ornamented with an eight-ray rosette with sticks between the rays. The painting on the vessel had the function of a charm. It protected the owner from the "evil eye".
